THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC

How Rex Wes was born

I met DJ Naughtyboyy on Facebook. As I was growing various brands — OBA8 — I wanted to do something fun with my online magazine to build it on social media. OVAH was an LGBTQ magazine highlighting up-and-coming DJs and artists, and I wanted a dance track to go with it.

I loved the saying “Don't You Know Who I Am,” and out of that came the tagline “You're Not Over Until We Say You're Over.” “Over” meant you were fabulous, you were fierce — if you were in the magazine, you had arrived. So I wanted a track, and DJ Naughtyboyy produced my first one.

I had Kingston KINKSTR coming out and wanted a track to go with that. That's when he introduced me to DJ Pluto, and DJ Pluto and I made pretty much all my other tracks — I'm so proud of “I'm Not Your Bitch.” He did all the remixes, and history was made.

Everyone used to say I had an amazing voice. I never believed it, but I did it out of fun. After the success of OVAH, that's when I decided to come up with the persona — Rex Wes.
